National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI)

NCSI is Oman's official statistics bureau — producing GDP accounts, population census, labour force surveys, trade statistics, and the indicator data that underpins Vision 2040 progress measurement.

Overview

The National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) is the Sultanate of Oman’s principal official statistics body, responsible for collecting, processing, and disseminating statistical data on all aspects of Oman’s economy, society, and environment.

Established by Royal Decree 38/2012, NCSI consolidated several previously dispersed statistical functions under a single agency. NCSI is a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission framework and subscribes to the IMF’s Data Standards initiatives.

Key Statistical Products

National Accounts: Quarterly and annual GDP estimates, sector-level value added, and expenditure-side GDP components. NCSI’s national accounts data form the basis for all macroeconomic analysis and Vision 2040 indicator tracking.

Population Census: Oman conducts a decennial population census. The most recent comprehensive census (2020) provided detailed population, nationality, employment, housing, and education data. A critical data source for policy planning.

Labour Force Survey (LFS): Quarterly surveys providing employment, unemployment, and labour force participation data by nationality (Omani/expatriate), sector, and governorate. The LFS data underpins Vision 2040 labour market tracking.

External Trade Statistics: Monthly import and export data by commodity and partner country. Key for tracking diversification of export base and trade balance trends.

Consumer Price Index: Monthly CPI measurements across major expenditure categories, used for inflation tracking and deflating nominal economic data.

Data Access

NCSI provides public access to statistical data through its website (www.ncsi.gov.om) and the National Data Portal. Selected indicators are published via the Open Data platform aligned with Oman’s digital government transformation. Data granularity varies — some series are publicly available at detailed level, others require institutional access.

Role in Vision 2040 Monitoring

NCSI data is the primary source for tracking Vision 2040 KPI progress. The Implementation Follow-Up Unit (IFU) coordinates with NCSI on data methodology and reporting frequency for Vision 2040 indicators. Where international comparison is required (Global Innovation Index, HDI, Ease of Doing Business), NCSI works with international organisations to ensure Oman data submissions are accurate and timely.
