Human Development Index
Definition
The Human Development Index is a composite statistic published by the United Nations Development Programme that measures a country’s average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development: life expectancy at birth, education attainment, and gross national income per capita.
Context
Oman ranks in the high human development category, reflecting significant improvements in health, education, and living standards since 1970. The HDI score captures the social returns from oil wealth investment and is a key benchmark for Vision 2040 progress.
Example
Oman’s HDI improvement from one of the lowest-ranked countries in 1970 to the high human development tier today reflects investments in universal education, modern healthcare facilities, and infrastructure that have transformed quality of life for Omani citizens.
