Smart City
Definition
A smart city is an urban area that uses digital technology, data analytics, and connected infrastructure to improve the quality of life for residents, enhance sustainability, and optimise the efficiency of urban operations and services including transport, energy, water, and waste management.
Context
Oman is developing smart city concepts within new urban developments, including elements of the Duqm masterplan and Muscat’s urban expansion. These projects incorporate smart grid technology, intelligent transport systems, and connected public services.
Example
A smart neighbourhood in Muscat uses sensors to monitor water usage, optimise street lighting based on pedestrian activity, and manage traffic flow through adaptive signal systems, reducing resource consumption and improving liveability.
