Oman Energy Transition Programmes Guide
Oman’s energy transition programmes represent one of the most ambitious decarbonisation strategies in the Gulf region. While maintaining its role as a hydrocarbon producer, the Sultanate is investing heavily in renewable energy, green hydrogen, carbon capture, and energy efficiency to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Key Facts
| Indicator | Value |
|---|---|
| Net-Zero Target Year | 2050 |
| Renewable Electricity Target | 30% by 2030 |
| Green Hydrogen Target | 1 MT/year by 2030 |
| Carbon Capture Projects | 3+ planned |
| Energy Efficiency Target | 15% reduction by 2030 |
Oman Energy Master Plan
The National Energy Strategy defines the pathway from fossil fuel dependence to a diversified energy mix. The plan phases in renewable energy capacity while maintaining oil and gas production for export revenues. A carbon pricing mechanism is under consideration to incentivise emissions reduction across all sectors.
Renewable Energy Programme
The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company manages competitive procurement of renewable energy capacity through independent power producer (IPP) tenders. The programme pipeline includes utility-scale solar, wind, and waste-to-energy projects totalling over 3,000 MW of planned capacity by 2030.
Green Hydrogen Strategy
Oman’s Hydrogen Strategy positions the country as a global top-five hydrogen exporter. The strategy designates zones for hydrogen production, establishes regulatory frameworks for hydrogen safety and certification, and targets production costs competitive with grey hydrogen by 2030.
Carbon Capture and Storage
Petroleum Development Oman operates the Miraah solar EOR project and is developing carbon capture and storage capabilities in depleted oil fields. The Ghaba North CO2 injection project demonstrates geological storage of carbon dioxide in subsurface formations.
Energy Efficiency
The National Energy Efficiency Programme targets a 15 percent reduction in energy intensity by 2030 through building efficiency standards, industrial process optimisation, and public awareness campaigns. The Oman Green Building Code mandates energy-efficient design for new construction.
