Oman Highways Guide

Guide to Oman highway network covering expressways major routes and road development projects

Oman Highways Guide

Oman’s road network spans approximately 32,000 kilometres connecting all governorates and major population centres. The government has invested heavily in modern expressways and intercity highways that traverse diverse terrain from coastal plains through mountain passes to desert landscapes. Road infrastructure is essential for economic activity given the dispersed geography of population centres.

Muscat Expressway

The Muscat Expressway connects the western suburbs of Muscat to the eastern areas and the airport, providing a high-capacity corridor through the capital. The dual carriageway features modern interchanges and tunnels cut through the mountainous terrain that characterises Muscat’s geography.

Batinah Expressway

The Al Batinah Expressway connects Muscat to Sohar and onward to the UAE border at Khatmat Milahah. This vital corridor supports industrial traffic between Sohar Port and Muscat while reducing transit times for passenger vehicles. The expressway has transformed the Batinah coastal plain into an integrated economic corridor.

Sharqiyah Expressway

The Sharqiyah Expressway connects Muscat to Sur and the eastern coastal region, facilitating tourism access to Wadi Shab, Ras Al Jinz, and the Wahiba Sands. The route passes through scenic mountain terrain with modern tunnels and bridges.

Interior Routes

The Muscat-Nizwa Highway connects the capital to the interior via the Adam junction, from which roads extend to Ibri, Duqm, and the southern Dhofar region. The Muscat-Salalah Highway covers approximately 1,000 kilometres through desert terrain.

Future Projects

Planned developments include the Duqm-Muscat Highway upgrade, additional mountain tunnel projects, smart highway technology integration, and rest area improvements along intercity routes to support the growing tourism sector.
