Sultan Qaboos University
SQU is Oman’s flagship research university with faculties spanning science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and humanities. The university operates specialised research centres including the Nanotechnology Research Centre, Water Research Centre, and Earthquake Monitoring Centre. SQU produces the majority of Oman’s academic research output.
The Research Council
The Research Council funds competitive research grants aligned with national priorities in five thematic areas: food and water security, energy, environment and biodiversity, health, and social sciences. The council also administers the National Innovation Strategy and manages technology transfer programmes.
Specialised Research Centres
The Marine Science and Fisheries Centre conducts marine ecosystem research and fisheries stock assessments. The Oman Animal and Plant Genetic Resources Centre preserves native species. The National Meteorological Centre provides climate research and weather forecasting services.
Innovation Ecosystem
Knowledge Oasis Muscat provides incubation and acceleration services for technology startups. The Oman Technology Fund invests in innovation-driven enterprises. University technology transfer offices at SQU and other institutions facilitate commercialisation of research outputs.
