Oman Copper Mining History | Oman Guide

Discover Oman 5,000-year-old copper mining heritage from ancient Magan to modern exploration.

Definition

Copper mining in Oman has a history spanning over five millennia. Ancient Oman, known to Mesopotamian civilisations as Magan, was one of the primary sources of copper for the Bronze Age world. Archaeological evidence shows that copper was smelted in the Omani interior from at least 3000 BCE and exported by sea to Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), the Indus Valley (modern Pakistan and India), and beyond. This ancient industry left behind extensive slag heaps, mine shafts, and smelting sites that are still visible today.

Context in Oman

Major ancient copper mining sites include Sohar, Al Arja, Tawi Arja, Lasail, and areas in the Samail ophiolite belt, where copper-bearing volcanic rocks are exposed at the surface. Oman Geological Survey and international archaeological teams have documented hundreds of ancient mining and smelting locations. Modern copper exploration has resumed, with companies investigating the commercial viability of deposits in the northern Hajar Mountains. Oman Mining Company (now part of Al Hadeetha Resources) operated the Lasail copper mine in the 20th century. New geological surveys suggest that economically viable copper and associated gold deposits may exist in unexplored parts of the ophiolite belt, prompting renewed interest from international mining firms.
