Oman Intellectual Property | Oman Guide

Guide to intellectual property protection in Oman covering trademarks, patents, and copyrights.

Definition

Intellectual property (IP) refers to legal rights that protect creations of the mind, including inventions (patents), brand names and logos (trademarks), literary and artistic works (copyrights), industrial designs, and trade secrets. Strong IP protection encourages innovation, attracts investment, and enables creators and businesses to commercialise their work with confidence. Oman has progressively strengthened its IP framework through national legislation and international treaty commitments.

Context in Oman

Oman IP regime is governed by several laws: the Industrial Property Rights Law (Royal Decree 67/2008) covers patents, trademarks, and industrial designs; the Copyright and Related Rights Law (Royal Decree 65/2008) covers literary and artistic works; and the Trade Secrets Law provides protection for confidential business information. IP registration is handled by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. Oman is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and the Madrid Protocol for international trademark registration. As part of the Oman-US Free Trade Agreement, Oman committed to enhanced IP protections including extended patent terms, data exclusivity for pharmaceuticals, and stronger enforcement against counterfeiting and piracy.
