Indicator Analysis
Healthy life expectancy (HALE) measures the expected number of years lived in full health — adjusted for years lived in poor health due to disease or injury. It is a more informative health measure than simple life expectancy because it accounts for the quality, not just the length, of life.
Oman’s trajectory: 65.6 years (2017) to an estimated 66.5 years — consistent with the trajectory toward 67 years by 2030. The 2030 target appears achievable.
Non-communicable disease burden: The major threat to HALE improvement is Oman’s growing NCD burden — diabetes prevalence above 15%, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. These conditions reduce HALE even as life expectancy extends.
2040 Challenge
Reaching 70 years HALE by 2040 requires:
- Effective NCD prevention and management (reducing diabetes incidence)
- Continued healthcare infrastructure improvement
- Physical activity and nutrition promotion (the Omani sports infrastructure investment contributes here)
- Sustained investment in healthcare research and clinical capability
The 2040 target of 70 years would place Oman among the world’s top healthcare performers — ambitious but directionally consistent with current trajectory.
